Do memory body is a multidisciplinary research project that aims to study the link between bodies and the affectation of their memories: how much of what we were we continues to be? is it ever gone? what space is left for novelty?
To do without a clear direction.
Is it possible to embody memories? Can we reconstruct an outline of what I once was, or who we once were? We move in search of dormant physicalities, aiming to find disturbing and unknown corners so we can awaken the in-significant. Because when that uniquely personal presence emerges from the depths, the body becomes a territory of encounters. Precise repetition was our mantra of practice.
We decided to call memories those experiences that a priori we cannot name clearly, but that the bodies do recognise in depth, and therefore can express them. For this research, memories are a step further back than recollection. It is in this blurred terrain where words take on water that we are situating ourselves.
Our hypothesis is that the forces inherent in all experience, as they occur, imprint themselves on bodies and shape them, like lightning that strikes, makes and marks. Based on this hypothesis, we ask ourselves: if I reproduce in today (making) the exact physicality (body) that this experiential lightning bolt generated that time (memory), will we be able to reproduce its context again, and amplify it, will I be able to discover its message, the reason for its reappearance?
In this research, we consider the space we move in as another body (weβll call it body.space), therefore, it also has its own memories. Each encounter of these bodies generates a subtle in-between that asks to be incarnated in order to reveal something about what hides in the base of the iceberg, not just one of its tips.
The body.performer in relation to a given space produces a specific code. That code changes if the body.space does too. This meeting of memories could only be happen in that temporo-spatial context, not in any other.
Water is the enabler of life, it was also our guiding element in this research. It is through the different states of this marvelous element, that a possible means to travel in-between is enabled: water can permeate the earth, it can expand on its surface and even evaporate to reach the sky. Water binds us together.
This research considers Water to be the one element that connects the bodies, besides nourishing us organically. It brings, carries and, therefore, stores our memories: the ones that were ( or we were?), and the ones being printed within us in the present. As if it were a sea of languages (or the language of the sea) that affects us at the same time that itβs affected. Water is the medium that registers the journey that we were and the one we are being. Water listens, and it is the one that allows us to listen ( feel the vibration between), therefore, it has memory.
